The Jetta's headlight (passenger) burnt out. now I need a proper replacement installed by 10 AM. Crud.

You should be able to get a 'H4' or 'H7' bulb (year depending) for the VW Jetta at any gas station or most supermarkets.

...assuming they use the same bulbs in America. There was a time when they didn't for some reason.

True. I used to think a bulb was a bulb the world over but looking around it doesn't seem so.
